So, it’s that time of the year when we are either in the throes of examinations and assessments or winding down from the busyness and time-consuming activity oftrials, tests, and temperature checks. You are looking forward to a much-needed break and can hear the jingle of the final bell, the vacation looming tantalizingly in the not-too-far distance. It’s time to round things up and bid farewell to another challenging but [hopefully] productive year. Spring is here and Summer is on the horizon. You are tired, but optimistic. As you go about getting ready for the end of the academic year, there are still some minor matters that may need addressing.

Let’s take stock:
1.  IT’S STILL HIRING SEASON - GET IN TOUCH: Whether you are moving onto greener pasturesor staying in your current position, now may be a good time to dust off your CV and update it with all the wonderful new things you have accomplished this year. It is always great to reflect on our success stories and the meaningful contribution that we have made to our school community during the year. Record these! Remember that the recruitment season is not over yet and with all the movement of teachers, there are still many great opportunities available. We at IES remain committed to providing you with the best international positions available. Why not give us a call and see if there is anything that catches your fancy for 2022-2023? Our professional recruiters can assist you by steering you in the right direction and making sure that you find the dream position that you always hoped for.  Giving the recruiter some insight into your skills, experiences and expectations maybe the difference in securing a good job. These will help the recruiters to narrow down a choice position that may be waiting just for you.

2. SEND US YOUR CV – IT’S TIME TO SHINE:
Updating your CV or your profile is a good way to ensure that you will get noticed. Remember that first impressions count!  Always provide a professional picture on your profile that shows your bright and friendly smile as this really makes a difference to the impression you create.  Let us know your job description or level that you teach, for instance: K-12, Elementary or Secondary education, or Special education.  When creating or updating your profile or CV, include all your skills and qualifications and make sure that you use some appropriate action verbs that describe your key performance areas; words like coached, facilitated, developed, coordinated. These are words that Principals and hiring agents are looking for and can really make your CV pop. In addition, some key values or education related skills could be included - student-centred instruction, interactive learning, cooperative learning, differentiated instruction, to name a few. Incorporating these throughout your CV or profile will validate your range of expertise and demonstrate to the hiring manager that you possess the necessary professional know- how to do the job.

3. DON’T FORGET YOUR SUPPORTING DOCUMENTS - ATTACH THESE TO YOUR APPLICATION: If you don’t have all the appropriate documents on hand, it may be a good idea to locate them during the vacation. Most schools require hard copies of your degrees and qualifications for visa purposes and work permits down the line, so make sure that these documents are readily available when required. A police clearance certificate, your COVID vaccine record and [sometimes] a medical report from your home country are necessary requirements for hiring. Also, check your passport validity as you don’t want to be caught with a near- expired passport. A trip back home can prove to be an unnecessary headache and costly toall parties concerned. Use your time to organize yourself. These commitments can be handled during the summer vacation, in between your much needed rest and relaxation.

4. AND FINALLY, BEFORE YOU LEAVE CAMPUS – GET ORGANISED: Make sure that you have completed your due diligence. Many schools have a list of requirements that must be completed before signing off. It is always good to leave on a good footing - do these willingly.  You may also need to secure a list of references or a referral from one or more of your superiors. Now is a good time! It is always easier to ask for a reference while you are still at the school than after you have left. Managers will appreciate you getting in early and giving them some time as they may have several to complete. Additionally, many schools may require you to get a police clearance record from your resident country, on exit. These can take some time for HR to organize, so get in early. Prior planning is crucial. Remembering that schools are busy places, some preparation can go a long way to ensuring that you don’t get caught up in the end of year frenzy when everyone is so preoccupied before wind down. The end of the year is as difficult to navigate as the beginning. Be ahead of the game. Be prepared.
